Kathryn Hird, Miniature Specialist and Painter of Many Talents

Water Crossing Five
O/C 20x16
Kathryn Hird is based in Amarillo, but if someone asked her where she is from she would reply, “The USA.” Having lived in nine states and visited most of the remaining 41, she lives in Texas by choice. “There’s room to turn around here,” she says.

A few years ago Kathryn decided to follow a dream and become a professional artist. Yet, as she explains, “I entered the business world backwards and found myself in need of extra income. That led to substitute teaching.” She has found that between painting and teaching, life is very busy and fulfilling. She particularly enjoys working with special-needs children. After school, she teaches art to home-schooled students and has had the privilege of working with some very talented teenagers.

Ms. Hird loves to experiment with various media, but her specialty is oil paint. Her favorite subject is landscapes, Arizona in particular. She can be found painting on location with fellow artists at favorite spots around the Panhandle. Recently she discovered the fun of painting still lifes. “I am always telling my kids they are not limited, so why should I be? I took a still life class to improve my skills and ended up expanding my horizons. Trying new things adds spice to life.”
Kathryn is also a handspinner who raises sheep to provide herself with fiber. After a friend gave her ten minutes of instruction on spinning, she spent the next nine years mastering the art. Now she teaches spinning because “No one should have to spend nine years figuring out what I can teach them in a few hours.”
